23rd May - Sailing North to K'Gari
Greetings from K’Gari. The last week has been a great sail north, putting in the miles towards the Whitsundays. After a week in Moreton Bay, we day sailed to Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast and had a few nights in the Marina there. Great spot and had a chance to catch up with family and friends…. and carry out a few minor repairs (as always).
From Mooloolaba we did another day sail to Noosa to have a 1 night stop before heading north to K’Gari. With the southerlies still kicking in, and the fact that Noosa was perfectly sheltered and such a beautiful place we stayed an extra two nights. Lia caught up on some work and I got a few days surfing in (small sets so perfect for me 😉) and a little work on the yacht.
Magical Noosa
On the 22nd May we sailed north towards K’Gari and the notorious bar crossing of Wide Bay Harbour with 18-20 knots from the south and a 1.5 metre swell. With the weather on the beam and a rising tide we crossed the bar under sail and flew through. What a rush. A big thanks to Tin Can Bay Coast Guard who gave me great information about it and the current waypoints. Also caught a nice tuna on the way up…. fresh tuna for a week. 😉
With failing light, we anchored not too far into the Sandy Straits before a sunrise start the next morning to make it through the shallow sections. We went in convoy through the shallows at high tide with fellow cruisers Dean and Ro on ‘Marilyn Kaye’ and Scotty and his family on ‘Dreamchaser’. Such a great cruising life community out there and we are looking forward to seeing them again and meeting many more cruisers on our journey north. We are now anchored off the Kingfisher Bay eco resort and have booked a 4WD tour of K’Gari for tomorrow.
Lia learning the 'ropes'. ;)
That's a great little tuna!!
